ACS Emergency Preparedness

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Defines Planning and Preparedness as:
  • A continuous cycle of planning, organizing, training, equipping, exercising, evaluating, and taking corrective action in an effort to ensure effective coordination during incident response.

Below are necessary steps that you and your family can take in the wake of an emergency.

Make A Plan

COLLECT – Create a paper copy of the contact information for your family and other important people or offices such as doctors, schools or other service providers.

SHARE – Make sure everyone has a copy. Post a copy in a centralized location in your home. Send to relatives.

PRACTICE – Have regular family meeting to review and practice your plan.You can use secondary headings to organize your text to make it more scannable for the reader.

Establish Emergency Meeting Places: Indoors, In neighborhood, outside of neighborhood, outside of town, on post, off post.

Build A Kit
Be sure to have the following items on you in the case of an emergency:
  • WATER - one gallon per person, per day (3 day supply for evacuation, 2 week supply for home)
  • FOOD - nonperishable, easy to prepare items (3 day supply for evacuation, 2 week supply for home)
  • FLASHLIGHT
  • EXTRA BATTERIES
  • SOLAR CELL PHONE CHARGER
  • FIRST AID KIT
  • MANUAL CAN OPENER
  • LOCAL MAPS
  • SANITATION & PERSONAL HYGIENE ITEMS - garbage bags, moist wipes, etc.
  • MEDICATIONS & MEDICAL ITEMS - 7 day supply
  • PET SUPPLIES - collar, leash, ID, food, carrier, bowl, medications
  • MONEY
  • IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS - CAC/ID cards, birth certificates, insurance policy, Power of Attorney, pet records, etc.

Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS)
The Integrated Public Alert & Warning System (IPAWS) is FEMA's national system for local alerting that provides authenticated emergency and life-saving information to the public through mobile phones using Wireless Emergency Alerts, to radio and television via the Emergency Alert System, and on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Weather Radio.
